Scottish Premier League

The top division in the current structure of football in Scotland is the Scottish Premier League (SPL).

It was formed in 1998 when 10 clubs split from the Scottish Football League to form the SPL. The league was enlarged to 12 teams for the 2000-01 season. Each team plays 38 games during the season. Each club plays the other 11 three times and then the division is split into two halves and clubs play five matches against teams in their half of the division.
