The Coronation Cup was first held in 1902 in honor of the coronation of King Edward VII. Osboch was the winner of the first race.

Shirocco, a five-year-old, won the 2006 running of the Coronation Cup. He won by almost two lengths over Ouija Board. Enforcer, a 66-1 long shot, finished third. Shirocco, a 2005 Breeders Cup champion, went off as the favorite at 8-11 odds. Ouija Board was 11-4.
The total purse for the 2006 running was 250,000 British pounds.

Christophe Soumillon rode Shirocco to victory. Andre Fabre was the trainer for owner Baron Georg von Ullmann. Shirocco’s winning time for the mile and a half was 2:37.64. The record time for the race is 2:34.84 clocked by Triptych in 1988.

Since 1990 Fabre has saddled five winners. In addition to Shirocco, they include In the Wings, 1990, Apple Tree, 1994, Sunshack, 1995, and Swain, 1996. Sir Michael Stoute has had four winners – Saddlers’ Hall, 1992, Opera House, 1993, Singspiel, 1997, and Daliapour, 2000.

Frankie Dettori is the leading jockey in recent years with four wins. They were with Swain, 1996, Singspiel, 1997, Daylami, 1999, and Mutafaweq, 2001.

Epson Downs, which is owned by The Jockey Club, is a grade-one racecourse and is regarded as a demanding, complex course that is a challenge for inexperienced horses and an endurance test for the more experienced runners.
