The Kentucky Derby is the first leg of the United States’ Triple Crown. The other races are the Preakness Stakes held at Pimlico Racecourse in Baltimore, MD, and the Belmont Stakes held at Belmont Park in Elmont, NY.

The race is called “The Run for the Roses” after the blanket of 554 red roses awarded to the winner. It is also known as “The most exciting two minutes in sports” for its approximate duration.

First held in 1875, the Kentucky Derby was run over a one and a half mile course. The distance was changed to the current mile and a quarter in 1896.

Barbaro won the 2006 race by six and a half lengths over Bluegrass Cat. Steppenwolfer finished third and Jazil and Brother Derek finished in a dead heat for fourth place. The race drew 157,536 fans, which is the second largest crowd in Kentucky Derby history.

The purse for the 2006 running of the Derby was $2 million.

Other recent Derby winners include: Giacomo, 2005; Smarty Jones, 2004; Funny Cide, 2003; War Emblem, 2002; Monarchos, 2001; Fusaichi Pegasus, 2000; Charismatic, 1999; Real Quite, 1998 and Silver Charm, 1997.

In recent years D. Wayne Lucas and Bob Baffert each have saddled three winners. Lukas’ champions include Thunder Gulch, 1995, Grindstone, 1996 and Charismatic. Baffert’s winners have been Silver Charm, Real Quiet and War Emblem.
