The Northumberland Plate is one of the richest two-mile handicap horse races
for thoroughbreds three-years-old and older.
It is the highlight of a three-day racing festival at Newcastle Racecourse
in Newcastle, England. Originally known as the Pitmen’s Derby, it
has been running since 1833 and is regarded as the top horseracing event
in northeast England.

The festival is normally held on the last Thursday, Friday and Saturday
in June. In addition to the Northumberland Plate, which is staged on Saturday,
other races are the Seaton Delaval Trophy on Thursday and the Northern
Rock Cup on Friday.
Toldo, a 33-1 long shot, won the 2006 Northumberland Plate, which had
a purse of 200,000 British pounds, by a neck over River Alhaarth, who
went off at 20-1. Greenwich Meantime, a co-favorite at 9-2, finished third
and Bulwark, the other co-favorite, wound up ninth.
Toldo was ridden by Nelson De Souza and trained by George Moore. Toldo’s
winning time was 3:27.48, well off the event record of 3:25.10 set by
Highflying in 1993.
Other recent winners of the Northumberland Plate include: Sergeant Cecil,
2005; Mirjan, 2004; Unleash, 2003; Bangalore, 2002; Archduke Ferdinand,
2001; Bay of Islands, 2000; Far Cry, 1999; Cyrian, 1998; and Windsor Castle,
1997.
In recent years, jockeys Kevin Darley and Willie Carson each have ridden
two winners. Darley won in 1999 on Far Cry and in 2000 on Bay of Islands.
Carson’s winning mounts were in 1990 on Al Maheb and in 1996 on
Celeric.
Three trainers each have saddled two champions. In addition to Toldo,
Moore trained Highflying in 1993. Paul Cole had winners with Cyrian in
1998 and Archduke Ferdinand in 2001. Martin Pipe’s winners were
Tamarpour in 1991 and Far Cry in 1999.
With a perimeter of six furlongs, the Newcastle Racecourse is a left-handed,
oval shaped, one-mile track. The course is characterized as decidedly
galloping with a steady climb from the turn into the straight that makes
it a testing track.
