The One Thousand Guineas is a Group 1 flat horse race for three-year-old
thoroughbred fillies held in the United Kingdom in late April or early May.
The fillies run over a distance of one mile (1609 meters) on the Rowley
Mile course at the Newmarket Racecourse in Newmarket, Suffolk.

One of five classic horse races in the United Kingdom, the One Thousand
Guineas was first run in 1814 when Charlotte was the victor. The stakes
race got its name because that was the prize fund - one thousand guineas.
Last year when Speciosa finished first, the purse was 330,000 British
pounds. Speciosa, who was ridden by Michael Fenton and trained by Pam
Sly, went off at 10-1 odds and finished two and one-half lengths in front
of Confidential Lady, who carried 12-1 odds. Speciosa’s winning
time was 1:40.53. The record time for the race is 1:36.38 set by Lahan
in 2000.
The 2006 One Thousand Guineas favorite at 3-1, Rumplestiltskin, finished
seventh and Flashy Wings, 7-1, who was expected to challenge Rumplestiltskin
for the crown, wound up 11th out of 13 entries.
Other recent winners include Virginia Waters, 2005; Attraction, 2004;
Russian Rhythm, 2003; Kazzia, 2002; Ameerat, 2001; Lahan, 2000; Wince,
1999; Cape Verdi, 1998; Sleepytime, 1997; and Bosra Sham, 1996.
Since 1997, jockey Kieren Fallon has ridden four winners. They were Sleepytime,
Wince, Russian Rhythm and Virginia Waters.
The top trainer in recent years is Henry Cecil. He saddled champions in
1996, 1997 and 1999.
Used only for flat racing, The Rowley Mile course at Newmarket Racecourse
is a wide, galloping track. The course goes downhill about two furlongs
from the finish line and the last furlong is uphill.
