Rail Link, an 8-1 shot, bested a field of eight to capture the 2006 Arc. Pride was second, a neck back, while the favorite, Deep Impact, 1-2, was third and Hurricane Run, 5-2, Great Britain’s horse of the year in 2005, was fourth.

Recent Arc champions include: Hurricane Run, 2005; Bago, 2004; Dalakhani, 2003; Marienbard, 2002; Sakhee, 2001; Sinndar, 2000; Montjeu, 1999; Sagamix, 1998; and Peintre Celebre, 1997.

Fabre, France’s leading trainer for nearly two decades, sent out three runners when only eight horses, which is the fewest since 1941, lined up for the start. Fabre has trained six Arc winners. In addition to Rail Link, they include Hurricane Run, Sagamix, Peintre Celebre, Carnegie, 1994, Subotica, 1992, and Dancing Brave, 1986.

Since 1995 three jockeys have each ridden three winners. Olivier Peslier was up on three consecutive winners – Helissio, 1996, Peintre Celebre and Sagamix. Frankie Dettori was aboard Lammtarra, 1995, Sakhee and Marienbard.

Six horses have won the Arc twice. The most recent is Alleged with back-to-back wins in 1977 and 1978.

The Longchamp racecourse is right-handed in a large horseshoe loop. The course rises gently before gradually descending down to the long bend that leads to a two and a half furlong finishing straight.
