The Queen Elizabeth II Stakes is a one-mile flat horse race for three-year-old
and older thoroughbred colts and fillies held at Ascot Racecourse, Berkshire,
England, in late September. The purse for the 2006 race was over £300,000.

First run in 1955, it was given a Group 2 status when the pattern system
was introduced in
1971. In 1987 the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes was upgraded to a Group 1
category. Since then the winners list includes most of the top milers
of their generation including Known Fact, 1980, Warning, 1988, Selkirk,
1991, and Dubai Millennium 1999.
Only two horses have won the race twice. They are Brigadier General in
1971 and 1972 and Rose Bowl in 1975 and 1976.
Other recent Queen Elizabeth II Stakes winners include: Starcraft, 2005;
Rakti, 2004; Falbrav, 2003; Where or When, 2002; Summoner, 2001; Observatory,
2000; Dubai Millennium, 1999; Desert Prince, 1998; and Air Express, 1997.
The 2005 race was held at Newmarket Racecourse while Ascot Racecourse
was being remodeled.
Since 1988 trainer Saeed bin Suroor has saddled three winners. The include
Mark of Esteem, 1996, Dubai Millennium, 1999, and Summoner, 2001. Frankie
Dettori has ridden three winners: Markofdistinction, 1990, Mark of Esteem
and Dubai Millennium.
