First run in 1776, the St. Leger Stakes is known as “the oldest classic turf race.” It is one of five classic horse races held in the United Kingdom and is the feature event of a four-day festival.

Other recent winners include: Scorpion, 2005; Rule of Law, 2004; Brian Boru, 2003; Bollin Eric, 2002; Milan, 2001; Millenary, 2000; Mutafaweq, 1999; Nedawi, 1998; and Silver Patriarch, 1997.

The leading jockey in recent years is Dettori. He rode winners in 1995, 1996, 2005 and 2006. Aidan O’Brien and Saeed bin Suroor have each trained three champions since 1998. O’Brien’s wins came in 2001, 2003 and 2005. Bin Suroor saddled winners in 1998, 1999 and 2004.
In addition to the St. Leger Stakes, the other triple crown legs are the Two Thousand Guineas Stakes and the Derby (Epsom Derby) Stakes.

The York racecourse is a flat left-handed U-shaped course, two miles in length with a run-in of almost five furlongs. Doncaster is a left-handed pear-shaped track, described as galloping and mainly flat that is two miles round with a four and a half furlong run-in.
