A Group 1 flat horse race for three-year-old colts and fillies, the Two Thousand Guineas is run over one mile (1,609 meters) in late April or early May. It has a purse of £333,000.

The Rowley Mile Course at Newmarket is a wide galloping track used for flat racing only with the second to last furlong downhill and the last furlong uphill, forming ‘The Dip’.

Because the Two Thousand Guineas Stakes takes place early in the horse racing season, there is little previous form from that year and last season’s two-year-old form is usually used as the most reliable guide to predicting the finishing order. Fillies rarely take part in the race even though they are eligible.

The Two Thousand Guineas was first run in 1809 and gets it name from the original guaranteed purse of 2,000 guineas (worth approximately 110,000 British pounds today). Wizard captured the first race.

Other recent winners include Haafhd, 2004; Refuse to Bend, 2003; Rock of Gibraltar, 2002; Golan, 2001; King’s Best, 2000; Island Sands, 1999; King of Kings, 1998; and Entrepreneur, 1997.

Fallon has ridden winners in four of the last six Two Thousand Guineas Stakes races. In addition to winning in 2005 and 2006, he was aboard King’s Best in 2000 and Golan in 2001. Sir Michael Stoute trained them both.

O’Brien has trained four winners since 1998. His other winners include King of Kings in 1998 and Rock of Gibraltar in 2002.
