Five major championships constitute the U.S. Open. They are men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles. In addition, tournaments for senior, junior and wheelchair players are held.

The U.S. Open grew out of two separate tournaments: the U.S. National Singles Championship for men which was first held in 1881 and the U.S. Women’s National Singles Championship, first contested in 1887.

The U.S. Open incorporates final set tiebreakers that make it different from the other three Grand Slam tournaments – The Australian Open, The French Open and Wimbledon.

Also, in the 2006 U.S. Open instant replay was used to review calls. Each player is allowed two challenges per set plus one additional challenge during a tiebreaker. An official review of the challenge is shown on the stadium video boards to the players, umpires and audience at the same time. The review is also shown to the television audience.

The total purse for the 2006 U.S. Open was about US$18.5 million. More than 600 men and women competed in the tournament.

Switzerland’s Roger Federer, who has won the last three men’s singles U.S. Open titles, defeated Andy Roddick, of the United States, who won in 2003, to win the 2006 trophy. Other recent winners include: Pete Sampras, 2002, 1996 and 1995; Lleyton Hewitt, 2001; Maroit Safin, 2000; Andre Agassi, 1999; and Patrick Rafter, 1998 and 1997.

In the 2006 women’s singles competition Russia’s Maria Sharapova defeated Belgium’s Justine Henin. Recent winners are: Kim Clijsters, 2005; Svetlana Kuznetsora, 2004; Henin, 2003; Serena Williams, 2002 and 1999; Venus Williams, 2001 and 2000; Lindsay Davenport, 1998; Martina Hingis, 1997; and Steffi Graf, 1996 and 1995.

Since the open era began in 1968, Jimmy Connors and Sampras both have five men’s singles titles while Chris Evert owns six women’s crowns.
