The MLB is governed by the Major League Baseball Constitution, which originated in 1876. The agreement has gone through man changes, with the most recent revisions made in 2005, which among other things, allows MLB to hire and maintain the sport’s umpiring crews. Both leagues divide the teams into three divisions. MLB’s regular season is from late March or early April to late September or early October. Three rounds of playoffs in both leagues follow the regular season. The playoff winners from each league meet in a best of seven games World Series to determine the overall MLB champion. Players and teams prepare for the regular season in spring training that is held during February and March in Florida and Arizona. Each team plays 162 games during the regular season. Most of the games are played against teams within their league. The schedule favors intra-divisional play. Inter-league play was introduced in 1997. NL’s St. Louis Cardinals defeated AL’s Detroit Tigers, four games to one, to win the 2006 World Series. Recent World Series championships are: Chicago White Sox, 2005; Boston Red Sox, 2004; Florida Marlins, 2003; Anaheim Angels, 2002; Arizona Diamondbacks, 2001; and New York Yankees, 2000, 1999 and 1998.
